I am a member of the Department of Linguistics and Basque Studies at the University of the Basque Country with a special interest in Natural Language Semantics and Pragmatics. My interest in these fields was aroused while studying Philosophy, at which time I realized that language is a powerful mechanism rooted in human nature. In the realm of Semantics, I have worked on presuppositions, reference and modality. In Pragmatics, I have worked on a general view of language use (Prete-emotional Pragmatics) which I have tried to apply to irony and, in some sense, also to discourse markers. The languages that most of my data are drawn from are Spanish and Basque. My teaching includes undergraduate courses on Translation Theory and Linguistics. I am currently the head of the MA Program in Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics. I have long experience in University management. I am also deeply engrossed in Literature and have had three books of creative writing published in addition to my academic investigations.
